August 26, 2002 -- Here's the sizzling secret to a long and healthy life: sex - and plenty of it.
That's the conclusion of a new study that reveals couples who make love in their old age get more than just satisfaction.
It found that the physical effects of sex produce health benefits that can dramatically improve mortality rates. The study of 35,000 people by researchers at Royal Edinburgh Hospital in Scotland was launched when older patients told doctors they thought their sex lives were suffering because of their age.
But many of their problems could have happened at any age, according to Dr. David Weeks, the clinical neuropsychologist in charge of the research.
Weeks found sex reduces the effects of negative emotions, such as stress.
And his study concluded that giving up early on sex can lead, quite literally, to an early grave.
"A premature cessation of sexual intercourse in early old age has been found to be associated with an increased mortality risk," he said. "Society assumes that the frequency and quality of sex declines with age. Sexuality is not the prerogative of younger people, nor should it be, although it is widely regarded as such."
"There is no fixed biological limit to a good sex life, and people who have sex tend to be happier and have healthier cardiovascular systems."
Results of the study will be published this week in the Sexual and Relationship Therapy Journal.
Now all i need is a fucking partner!
