online vs phone

in a not so distant past i installed AIM on my parents' computer
i'm not sure if there was a grand purpose to it or whether it was just a habitual installation, but ever so after i sometimes chat through it with my parents.

my father is more or less fine with the concept of chatting through AIM
my mother, it seems, thinks of these conversations as being similar to phone conversations.

i noticed a while ago that whenever i speak to her, the conversations are always very short and to the point. she says hi, she says this or that, and if there isn't anything else to say, she says bye.

it's nothing to do with her leaving or being busy; rather not realizing, i think, that an online conversation can go on indefinitely and that you only say bye if you're leaving the computer.

maybe i'll explain it to her.
